Attorney General Faris Al Rawi presented statistics on Wednesday at the second round of public consultation on the Marriage Act and Issues Related to Children.
He stated that child marriages did not occur only in the Hindu religion or just in rural areas.
He addressed a packed room of religious bodies, NGO’s and members of the judicial system at the Radisson Hotel.
He said that while the focus has been on comments from the General Secretary of the Sanatan Dharma, Maha Sabha and the laws governing the Hindi Marriage Act child marriages are not unique to the Hindu religion.
He sought to dismiss the notion that under age marriages only take place in rural areas due to a lack of education.
He revealed that according to statistics between 1997 and 2016 underage marriages were occurring more in urban areas like Aranguez, Arima, Port of Spain and San Fernando.
