President of the Contractors and General Workers Union (CGWTU) Ainsley Matthews is predicting a bleak Christmas for some 200 casual workers attached to the San Fernando City Corporation.
The workers who maintain the sanitation of the City, will be without jobs for the rest of the year because of a cut back in the City’s allocation.
Matthews said he was informed by CEO Indarjit Singh that effective this fortnight and for the rest of the year, the City will not be able to employ any causal workers as funds have not been released for them to do so.
Speaking with News Power Now on Tuesday, Mr. Mathews lamented what he called the inability of the working class to share the wealth of the country.
The CGWTU Head accused the Finance Minister and the Government of not being sensitive to the needs of the working class and the poor in the country.
San Fernando Mayor Junia Regrello also said while he is not privy to all the details at this time, he understands the CEO received a cheque from the Ministry of Finance along with instructions to reduce the work force, as the amount only covers basic salary for the month and nothing for overtime or additional work. He said he would be briefed on the details at today’s council meeting.
Holding out little hope for the workers Mathews also said that they could only return to their jobs if the Government allocated more money to the Corporation.
However he expressed little hope that this would happen
