An Independent Senator is calling for government to place emphasis on developing thousands of acres of abandoned land for agriculture purposes.
Recently objections were highlighted by some persons in the agriculture sector about the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana governments, which will provide 10,000 acres of land in Berbice for immediate agriculture production.
A further 90,000 acres of Guyana’s land will also be made available to Trinidad and Tobago, with the Government inviting private-sector investment in agricultural production.
The initiative was revealed by Finance Minister Larry Howai in his budget presentation on September 9th.
However, speaking during the Budget Debate in the Upper House on Friday, Independent Senator , Subhas Ramkhelwan, said while he is not opposed to the Guyana farming initiative, local food production must be tackled with greater urgency to boost food production.
He also expressed concerns about a decline in oil and gas production.
