Police have placed a prison officer and his family into protective custody after a shooting incident at the officer’s home on the weekend. Gunshots rang out at the officer’s Jerningham Avenue, Belmont home at around midnight on Saturday, leaving the officer’s 5-year-old daughter nursing a non life-threatening injury- a bullet graze to be exact.
Prison Officer, Nigel Daniel and his family had been asleep just after midnight, when they were awaken by the sound of gunfire.
Following the incident, the child was treated at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital before being taken into protective custody. The gunmen, meanwhile, were not captured by police officers and are now being sought.
The shooting comes on the heels of a series of violent attacks on prison officers over the past two months.
Prisons officers’ association President, Ceron Richards says the matter is being closely monitored.
