If child marriage is protected by Islamic law then it’s not objectionable.
This is according to Imam Hajish Azjal Mohammed.
The issue of child marriage captured public attention recently.
The Head of the IRO Brother Harrypersad Maharaj came under heavy criticism for his stance on the burning issue.
He recently revealed that the IRO had taken the decision to support child marriages.
Mohammed said that persons opposed to child marriage were not looking at the bigger picture.
He revealed in an interview this morning that there was no option for girls if they became pregnant, however if they were married then they would be protected.
Archbishop Barbara Grey Burke agreed with this position, stating that the focus for should always be on family life.
She said that the Government should leave religion alone, noting that what they could do was go into the Primary schools and teach children about family life.

Meanwhile things became heated at the Power 102.1fm studios this morning on the Power Breakfast Morning Show when the issue was discussed.
The team hosted Former Raziah Ahmed representing the National Muslim Women’s Organisation of T&T and Ms.Renuka Kangal PRO of the Hindu Women’s organization.
Mohammed stated that all the concern around child marriage was a non-issue.
She said that it was something that the academics could work out.
Things also heated up in an exchange between Ahmed and invited guest Political scientist Rhoda Bharath.
