Three men have appeared before a Couva magistrate on charges of cocaine and marijuana trafficking and possession of firearm and ammunition after they were allegedly found with more than 23 million dollars’ worth of cocaine.
Two of the men, brothers Wayne and Joel Havelock were both granted bail in the sum of granted $5.5Mn and $5Mn respectively.
The third accused, YUDISHTIR MAHARAJ, 36, a businessman, of El Socorro Extension, San Juan, was advised to apply to a judge on the issue of bail.
The men were arrested on Friday 6th October, 2017, after officers of the Organised Crime and Intelligence Unit, stopped and searched a vehicle being driven by MAHARAJ, along Southern Main Road, California.
The search allegedly resulted in the discovery of one Glock pistol with 26 rounds of ammunition, 560 grammes of marijuana and 52 kilogrammes of cocaine.
The officers then proceeded to the residence of WAYNE HAVELOCK, where they executed a search warrant, with the assistance of the Inter-Agency Task Force and the Guard and Emergency Branch.
The search resulted in 5.52 kilogrammes in cocaine, 1.94 kilogrammes in marijuana, four magazines and 52 rounds of assorted ammunition being found.
When they appeared before Senior Magistrate Siumongal Ramsaran, in the Couva Magistrates’ 1st Court, on Wednesday, the matter was adjourned to Monday 23rd October.
