Well-known criminologist Renee Cummings during an interview said that Trinidad and Tobago needs to move away from the Military approach it takes when dealing with crime reduction in this country.
According to Ms. Cumming having a military approach when dealing with crime, is the old, colonial thinking that we still subscribe to.
She added though the national security ministry has a great role to play in crime reduction in this country it is also important that they have an in-depth understanding of street crime and she hopes with this new administration there would be a better understanding of crime and youth violence.
Criminologist Cummings advised the newly appointed Minister of National Security that he has to realize that the Ministry of National Security carries political weight for the Government, mainly because the effectiveness or ineffective of the government is often judged on the crime situation.
