THE SUN.CO.UK- DONALD Trump insisted he’s “not a racist” yesterday after reportedly branding African and South American countries “s***holes”.
The US president was on the receiving end of a firestorm of criticism after allegedly asking why the US should accept people fleeing disasters in Haiti, El Salvador and Africa.
He tweeted on Friday to deny making the comments, which were reported by several US papers and confirmed by Democrat Senator Dick Durbin, who was at the meeting in question.
And he told reporters at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, yesterday: “I’m not a racist. I am the least racist person you have ever interviewed, that I can tell you.”
The alleged expletive came during a Thursday meeting between Trump and lawmakers about immigration reform.
The president reportedly demanded to know why the US should accept immigrants from “s***hole countries” rather than – for instance – wealthy and overwhelmingly white Norway.
His comments were met with scorn by Democrats who branded them “divisive” and “elitist”.
Utah congresswoman Mia Love, who is of Haitian heritage, said in a statement: “The president’s comments are unkind, divisive, elitist, and fly in the face of our nation’s values.
“This behaviour is unacceptable from the leader of our nation.
“My parents came from one of those countries but proudly took an oath of allegiance to the United States and took on the responsibilities of everything that being a citizen comes with.”
