Finance Minister says great demand foreign currency

An admission is coming from Finance Minister Winston Dookeran there is there is a great demand for foreign currency and this is putting pressure on its supply to citizens.

The Downtown Owners and Merchants Association has expressed concern over what it says is a “persistent” shortage in foreign currency.

DOMA also called on the Central Bank to provide reliable information on the country’s foreign exchange situation.

Commenting on the matter, Central Bank Governor Ewart Williams says the Bank would be able to meet the demand for foreign exchange that is needed for productivity, but the country could not sustain the current level of capital flight.

Speaking in the Senate today on the issue,   Minister Dookeran said the heavy demand for foreign currency is being felt in the financial sector.

However, he noted this development is not a strange experience and there is no need for panic.
