Firey protest in Point Fortin this morning…residents say they are fed up of their local government councillor

oil spill 3Residents of Vance River, in Vessigny, South Trinidad have staged a fiery protest this morning in light of what they says is poor representation by their local government councillor.

Speaking with News Power Now, one resident who wished to go anonymous said for years their councillor who is Gerald Debesette has not been active in the area and their request for improvements to the rural area have fall on deaf ears.

point protestMeanwhile the Local Government councillor for Brighton/Vessigny, Gerald Debesette was contacted for comment on the protest and the calls made for him to step down as councillor.

Debesette told news power now, his work as councillor for the area is not at fault but more so a ruptured Petrotrin oil line which leaked into the Vance River Extension was cause for the resident’s outburst.

Debesette said a primary school child on his way home from school fell into the river.

To date Debesette said there was no word from Petrotrin about fixing the oil line.

Local Government councillor for Brighton/Vessigny Gerald Debesette said he met with the Member of Parliament for Point Fortin was contacted and informed of the situation this morning.

News Power Now contacted Petrotrin’s Corporate Communications department to ascertain whether or not this allegation has been confirmed.

We were told that a team a currently at the scene and as soon as information becomes available it will be put in the public domain.
