The lone candidate for election to the office of President named by Government and endorsed by Opposition, Madame Justice Paula Mae Weekes was elected at 1.30 pm on Friday at the Parliament Chamber, Port-of-Spain, when the Electoral College met.
Incumbent President Anthony Carmona’s term comes to an end in March. He is, incidentally, out of the country, attending the inaugural session of the current term at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, where he was invited to deliver the opening address.

Madame Justice Paula Mae Weekes will be the country’s 6th President.
The late former President George Maxwell Richards, the country’s fourth President, was cremated after a state funeral on Wednesday. He died on January 8, after suffering a heart attack.
