Former Chaguanas Mayor, Orlando Nagessar, says the people of Trinidad and Tobago should be the ones to elect their mayor.
Speaking on Friday, at the Chaguanas Borough Corporation, after United National Congress (UNC) alderman Gopaul Boodhan was elected mayor, Mr. Nagessar, who served as Chaguanas mayor for the past three and half year, called for reform to the process.
Nagessar suggested the election of mayor be re-examined in the present local government reform. Stating that mayoral candidates should face the polls and the people.
He noted this procedure was successfully practised in Commonwealth countries and can be cost-effective if applied here, as the mayoral candidates’ names can be added to the same ballot paper.
He added, it was very unfortunate the process of electing a mayor and deputy mayor was filled with so much controversy and ill will.
