The government is seeking to make provisions relating to mutual assistance in criminal matters between Trinidad and Tobago and nations other than Commonwealth countries.

This was the focus on the ruling administration during deliberations on the Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters Act, 2017 in the House of Representatives as government continues its fight against money laundering.

Minister in the Office of the Attorney General with responsibility for Legal Affairs, Stuart Young, says mutual assistance is part of this country honoring its international commitments.

Meanwhile, Opposition Member of Parliament, Dr. Bhoe Tewarie, suggested that the bill should be brought before a Joint Select Committee of Parliament to ensure that citizens’ privacy rights are not violated.
