Chaos and delays at the Piarco International Airport overnight as hundreds of arriving passengers were forced to suffer the frustrating wait to be allowed clearance into the country. The situation, News Power Now understands, came as a result of a staff shortage at the airport. With only two immigration officers on duty, many posted their frustration to social media from as early as 2pm yesterday.
The situation came on the heels of calls by PSA President, Watson Duke for customs and immigration officers to stay off the job last week Thursday and Friday, to protest government’s intention to establish a Revenue Authority.
Watson Duke is yet to comment on the situation, making it unclear as to whether yesterday’s airport immigration delays were as a direct result of last week’s protest call. It is understood that additional immigration staff were called our to work at around 7pm on Sunday, leading to somewhat of an ease later on in the evening.
There are reports that lines were so long that they backed up to the tarmac.
