Industrial Court Backlog Cleared, Says President. Questions Now Arise Over Staff Shortage.

President of the Industrial Court, Deborah Thomas-Felix, says the lack of funds available to the court is impacting its ability to deliver judgments in a timely manner.

Speaking at a ceremonial sitting of the Industrial court this morning to mark the opening of the new law term, Judge Thomas-Felix explained there is a shortage of court reporters.

The reporters are responsible for transcribing notes of evidence and submissions from hearings which judges then use to make their judgments.

Judge Thomas Felix says when she assumed office in 2011 there were a number of outstanding judgments dating back since 2008. She adds that this backlog has now been cleared but fears that the staff shortage will bring about another backlog of judgments.
