Chaguanas West Member of Parliament , Jack Warner, has surrendered to the Trinidad and Tobago Fraud Squad in Port of Spain.
Mr. Warner is appearing in the 8th Magistrate’s Court at this time.
His action follows reports earlier today that police had obtained a warrant for Mr. Warner’s arrest.
In a statement, Attorney General, Garvin Nicholas, indicated that the United States of America formally requested the assistance of the Central Authority Unit for the issuing of a Provisional Arrest Warrant for the former FIFA Vice President Jack Warner, pending the commencement of extradition proceedings.
The AG said the Central Authority Unit of the Ministry of the Attorney General has been working in conjunction with the United States Department of Justice for approximately one year regarding the investigation of transnational offences involving Mr. Warner.
He said this request was made pursuant to the Extradition Treaty between the Government of the United States of America and this country’s Government.
Mr. Nicholas noted that the Provisional Arrest Warrant was issued and is now in the hands of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service for execution.
The statement added that Mr. Warner is entitled to a fair extradition process and both the Requesting and Requested States intend to abide by the provisions of the Treaty to ensure that Mr. Warner’s rights are respected.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar meanwhile, in a statement on the issue in the House of Representatives this afternoon, said Mr. Warner is wanted to stand trial for racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering offences in the US.
