There seems to be discontent brewing in the camp of the United National Congress.
News has surfaced that political Leader of the party Kamla Persad- Bissessar has called early elections for leadership of the party.
The situation has raised the question of whether or not Persad- Bissessar was acting ultra vires of the party’s constitution by calling elections for the post of political leader, one year earlier than scheduled.
While Persad-Bissessar and the National Executive (NATEX) may not think so, UNC MP for Chaguanas West, Ganga Singh thinks the election for the post of political leader at this time is a breach of section 18 of the party’s constitution.
As such he has taken the decision to challenge the post of Political Leader of the party.
Speaking on the Power Breakfast Show on Power 102.1FM this morning he revealed that he considered the move unconstitutional, illegal and unlawful.
He stated that the Political Leader is elected for a three year period and all other members of the executive are elected for a two year period and the last election for Political Leader was in December 2015.
This would mean that elections within the party would be due in 2018.
