United National Congress Chairman, Khadeeja Ameen says she applauds the commitment made by Opposition Leader, Dr. Keith Rowley who, on the weekend, assured that he would give local government agencies more empowerment to financially manage their affairs on the community level, should the PNM be successful in the upcoming general election.
Ameen who previously held the post of Chairman of the Tunapuna/Piarco regional corporation said local government is the arm of government that is closest to the people.
She however said the People’s Partnership government has acted on delivering to the people at the local government level, by ensuring that local government elections were called when they were constitutionally due.
She chastised the PNM for its lack of action for some 20 years, in ensuring that corporations received the strength they needed by appointing and assigning chief officers to posts within the various corporations.
The UNC Chair said she hopes the Opposition Leader lives up to his promise.
