A squatter containment package has been placed before the law review committee to not only discourage squatting but to prevent land grabbing.
Minister of Lands and Marine Resources Jairam Seemungal says this has been before the law review committee since 2011.
He says while the government aims to regularize squatters, it does not intend to encourage it.
Speaking on the power breakfast morning show on power 102.1fm, Mr. Seemungal said there are land grabber developers who grab forest reserve lands and sell to unsuspecting clients.
He said the government has taken steps to remove these land grabber developers.
Mr. Seemungal said his ministry has been working with the Ministry of National Security to contain the problem.
The legislation will be debated in the house today.
