Protest action this morning by residents of East Port-of- Spain is causing massive traffic delays in and around the capital city.
Parts of Charlotte Street, Observatory Street and Quarry Street have been blocked by residents who set fire to debris along the roadway.
Videos circulating on social media show a heavy police presence, while fire officers attempt to put out some of the fires and clear the roads.
Sources say the protest stems from the police shooting over the weekend of a well-known resident identified as Akeil James AKA Christmas.
Gunshots are being heard in the area at this time.
Motorists and pedestrians are being advised to avoid the following areas:
• Upper Charlotte Street to Park Street and “Behind the bridge” to Observatory Streets.
• Tributaries to Charlotte Street i.e Oxford Street and Quarry Street are also affected.
