Opposition Chief Whip Questions Whether CAL Subsidy Removal Will Affect Jobs

The Opposition Chief Whip is calling on the government to explain whether the decision to remove the fuel subsidy from national carrier Caribbean Airlines will affect job security at the state owned entity.

On September 9th during the presentation of the 2013\2014 budget Finance Minister, Larry Howai, said he had been told by the CAL Board that the discontinuation of the fuel subsidy on October 1st this year will not have an impact on the cost of airline tickets.

Contributing to the Budget Debate in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Port of Spain South Member of Parliament , Marlene Mac Donald,  said CAL is on a restructuring programme  and government plans to pump a significant amount of investment into the airline.

She said fundamental changes are needed at CAL to ensure it becomes a viable entity.
