This country is said to be ranking number 1 in terms of the prevalence of diabetes.
At present one hundred and seventy thousand persons suffer with the type two condition of the disease in this country.
This development was revealed by the Public Relations Officer of the Diabetes Association of Trinidad and Tobago, Zobida Rambirsingh.
She was speaking in a News Power Now interview this afternoon on today’s observance of World Diabetes Day.
It is celebrated annually on November 14th.
Led by the International Diabetes Federation, World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by the World Health Organization.
It was done in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes.
Ms Rambirsingh said the condition is also affecting children at an alarming rate.
