Plans are afoot to build multi- correctional facility in Tobago

John Sandy 3 The National Security Minister John Sandy says plans are afoot to construct a multi-correctional facility in Tobago, to cater to the needs of the island.

He said the decision was taken as there is currently only one government run facility, the youth training centre for detaining juveniles.

Minister Sandy says the YTC located in Trinidad is not regarded as a prison, as male juveniles between 16 and 18 are placed at this institution for the purpose of rehabilitation.

He says consequently all male juveniles arrested are transferred to this facility, with women being placed at the Golden Grove Prison designated for female juvenile offenders.

The new unit would be designed to treat with young offenders as well as to develop skills.
