Preliminary investigations into Carrera Island Prison break indicates Breach of Protocol and Procedures

NEWS GRAPHIC 4Failure to comply with proper protocol and procedures are being cited by Prisons Commissioner, Sterling Stewart, as factors which contributed to the escape of two inmates from Carrera Island Prison.

On Monday August 31st Steve Mc Gilvary and Leroy Mohammed escaped from the correctional facility reportedly around 6 p.m.

Mc Gilvary is serving a 30-year sentence for unlawful killing, 34-year-old Mohammed is serving a 12-year sentence for robbery with aggravation.

They remain on the run.

In an interview Commissioner Stewart said from preliminary investigations a break down in following proper protocol resulted in implications in the system.

Commissioner Stewart also complimented officers who continue to carry out their duties in a professional way.

Meanwhile, President of the Prison Officers Association, Ceron Richards, in an interview this week said the incident highlighted the need for challenges facing the nation’s prisons to be treated with a level of urgency.
