Club Sando head coach Angus Eve captured his first ever The Fan Club Coach of the Month gong, winning the honour for July in the 2017 Trinidad and Tobago Pro League.
It’s no surprise with his Club Sando side currently tied on 17 points with W Connection and North East Stars at the top of the 2017 standings and on a seven-game unbeaten stretch in pursuit of the Pro League crown.
“It’s fantastic what The Fan Club is doing,” said Eve, who was honoured at The Fan Club’s Movie Towne outlet at Invaders Bay in Port of Spain on September 1.
The 45-year-old former Trinidad and Tobago midfielder who still holds the record as the most capped T&T international praised the sport merchandise and apparel store’s involvement in the holistic development of the Pro League.
“A lot of people cry that we are in an economic downturn, but the banks are still making profits and a lot of big construction continue around the country. It’s just unfortunate for the Pro League and all sports in general, that when people say the country is in a recession, the first thing to be affected is sport.
“But sport is the only thing that really unifies this country. It keeps guys off the street, away from crime and towards improving their lives. We have guys at Club Sando who are making a living for themselves through sport, some even focused on having their own homes.”
After opening losses to Morvant Caledonia United (2-1) and W Connection (3-1) this season, Sando have been steadily on the rise since holding Point Fortin Civic to a 1-1 draw on Jun. 30.
Eve’s side went on to defeat St. Ann’s Rangers (2-0), Police FC (4-0) and Jabloteh (2-1), and held Central (1-1), all in the month of July before Defence Force (2-1) and Morvant Caledonia (1-0) became Sando’s latest victims in August.
“I brought in the attacking element this season adding a bit of experience around the team,” explained Eve. “The synergy wasn’t right in our first two games this season against a very spunky (Morvant) Caledonia and a very experienced W Connection. We revisited our team selection pushing (pre-season signing) Akim Armstrong into the forward role and it strike a bit of balance.
“We want to improve our fifth-position finish of last season. We lost a lot of goals this season in [last season’s top scorer] Akeem Roach (who did not re-sign with the club in hopes of securing a move abroad). We also lost Roach’s ability to hold up play and bring the rest of the team into the attack. But we have done a lot of work on improving the mental aspect of the game and team spirit. So all those things have contributed to us going seven games unbeaten.”
Sando however, have not been in competitive action since avenging their round one loss against Morvant Caledonia on August 11 due to the Pro League’s month-long break to facilitate the Trinidad and Tobago national team’s preparation for World Cup qualifiers on September 1 and 5 which the Soca Warriors lost to Honduras (2-1) and Honduras (3-0) respectively.
Sando will return to competitive action against Northern Football Association side Cultural Roots in the TTFA run FA Trophy Round of 64 on Sunday from 4:30pm at Dibe Recreation Ground, St. James, and Eve, who led former club North East Stars to the FA Trophy when it was last contested in 2015, wants victory before resuming play in the Pro League against North East Stars on September 19.
“With the long break it’s like starting over when the league resumes,” said the Sando coach. “We are a bit disappointed because we had a really good momentum and now it’s like we are in pre-season all over again. But we will do we can to keep our players focused in pushing for the (Pro League) title, and take the remaining games as nine finals.”
