The Local Government Election result in the Chaguanas Borough Corporation presents an opportunity for the “full positive impact of proportional representation to be felt by the citizens. So says Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar.
In a statement to the media on Wednesday, the Prime Minister referred to the 4-4-4 polling result for the Corporation, which is yet to be confirmed by the Elections and Boundaries Commission.
According to PM Persad-Bissessar, her Government’s delivery of Proportional Representation reform was intended to strengthen the democratic process by increasing the value of each vote.
The Prime Minister said this means that they now have an opportunity to ensure elected officials work together, without citizens being concerned that their interests are being brokered and horse-traded purely for power.
She said without this change in law, the PNM would have attained disproportionate power to make Corporation decisions.
The Prime Minister also reminded the nation of the number of revelations made during the Local Government Elections campaign on candidates who have faced and are currently facing various charges.
