Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley has revealed that the San Fernando to Point Fortin Highway project has been stopped.
He gave the information during a media briefing minutes before he left on a trip to the United States, United Kingdom and Ghana.
Dr. Rowley explained that the Government was in the middle of attempting to disentangle itself from a scandalous arrangement surrounding the highway project.
He said that the Government planned on making new arrangements so that the project could continue.
The Prime Minister revealed that many adjustments had been made so that the original designs could continue.
He also stated that it was quite likely that the Government would have to terminate that contract and start over with new contracting arrangements to get the highway finished.
Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi also explained that consideration to possibly terminating the existing contract would be influenced by the fact that the existing contractor, Brazilian conglomerate Group OAS, was facing bankruptcy and was before the courts facing several serious criminal allegations.
He said that the Government had an obligation to finish the project works.
He disclosed that contractors had packed up tools and shipped equipment to different jurisdictions and sold assets.
