LOOPTT.COM – Prison officers no longer feel safe in this country.
This was the message sent this morning by President of the Prison Officer’s Association (POA) Ceron Richards.
Richards, with the support of several prison officers and their relatives, made their way to the Canadian Embassy this morning along Sweet Briar Road, Port of Spain, where they delivered a letter to the embassy.
In the letter, the POA outlined the concerns that the organization and its membership had, and requested information on the procedure of how to seek asylum in Canada.
Speaking to LoopTT, Richards further explained:
“Prison officers no longer feel safe here. We are no longer confident in the abilities of the State in this Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to adhere to its own constitution and protect its members and the lives of their families. So we are looking at alternatives. And that includes leaving. We do not want to, but our lives and the lives that we care about are important. And we are not seeing any of this being reflected by the Government.”
In October, two prison officers were shot dead in separate incidents just days apart.
