Steel workers laid off

Christopher HenryThe Steel Workers Union of Trinidad and Tobago is reporting that Arcelor Mital has taken a decision to lay off all employees with immediate effect, in the first instance from December 7th to January 15th 2016.

It adds that only a few workers are to remain on the plant for maintenance purposes.

Chief Labour Relations Officer and Executive Treasurer at the Steel Workers Union, Timothy Bailey, in a News Power Now interview explained that international there has been a decline in activity in the sector.

Mr Bailey added that the arrangements agreed upon with respect to the cost of natural gas and electricity supplied to the company has also come to an end.
