The decision to suspend Opposition Leader Dr. Keith Rowley was a strategic move by the Government to prevent Dr. Rowley from producing evidence of misconduct against Finance Minister Larry Howai.
This is the view of senior member of the People’s National Movement Colm Imbert who staged a walk out of Parliament yesterday as the Government started debate on the second motion of censure against Dr. Keith Rowley.
Mr. Imbert says the Government is desperate because the approval ratings of the Opposition Leader is getting better than the Prime Minister.
He says more importantly, the Government is trying to prevent Dr. Rowley, who moved a motion of censure against the Finance Minister, from bringing that motion to its natural conclusion.
Mr Imbert says the Government is doing all it can to prevent Dr. Rowley from prosecuting the matter involving Mr. Howai.
Mr. Imbert says this latest move by the Government is illegal and absurd.
But speaking on the power breakfast morning show on power 102.1fm, leader of Government Business Dr. Roodal Moonilal said the decision to suspend the Opposition Leader is supported by standing order 66:16 which states that the house has the power to take proceedings on any of its members.
Dr. Moonilal said if the Opposition is so convinced that the move is illegal then its free to take the matter before the courts.
Dr. Moonilal said the Government gave Dr. Rowley the opportunity to defend himself but he refused to do so.
However he said he regrets that Dr. Rowley wont be able to finish debating the motion of censure he brought against Finance Minister Larry Howai.
Dr Moonilal said the accusations brought to the house by Dr. Rowley brought the parliament into disrepute. He said Dr. Rowley was not the first person to be suspended from the parliament as Basdeo Panday and Chandresh Sharma were both thrown out of Parliament.
