According to reports officers attached to the Port of Spain Division managed to spot the men at the gas station along the Beetham Highway, which is managed by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Social and Welfare Association.
The gas station had been locked and secured around 10 Wednesday night by officials, who then left the premises.
However, around 5:00 am, officers on a routine patrol saw a group of men attempting to break into the compound.
The men, on seeing the officers, fled the scene and dropped several items which were believed to have been taken from the compound, including cigarettes and engine lubricants.
All the items which were dropped were said to have been recovered and an inventory conducted later in the morning showed that nothing was missing.
