The Book Industry Organisation of Trinidad and Tobago (BIOTT) says that it is willing to meet with Education Minister Anthony Garcia for discussions on improving the Ministry’s textbook rental programme.

BIOTT president Rico Charran made this request following last week’s announcement by the education minister that textbooks bearing school stamps where being sold by second-hand bookseller on the streets of Port-of-Spain.

Garcia stated that this information was brought to his attention by concern teacher and parents and alleges that this mismanagement of government property may have stemmed from collusion between a number of textbook publishers and second-hand vendors.

Charran quickly came to the defense of his members indicating that there is a high degree of transparency on the part of publishers and that the ministry should examine their internal accounting processes to seek clarification on the matter.
