Former Health Minister Dr. Fuad Khan is today expressing concern with the apparent closure of the Neonatal Unit at the San Fernando General Hospital.
In a statement Dr. Khan says as a medical professional and former Minister of Health, it is becoming quite frustrating to witness the current
administration undermine decades of progress in the public health sector through negligence and mismanagement.
He says the closure of the Neonatal Unit at the San Fernando General Hospital is only the latest in a series of gaffes by this government that is severely affecting the health care services being provided to our citizens.
Dr. Khan says, what this has done is not only added further burden to the neonatal unit at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, which is now tasked with caring for the babies relocated from the San Fernando facility, but during the time that it takes for the San Fernando unit to be repaired, there are currently no neonatal facilities to service citizens south of the Caroni bridge.
In an immediate response there is now official confirmation that the Neonatal unit at the San Fernando General Hospital Unit is in-fact operational.
The update comes from Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Akenath Misir.
Speaking with News Power Now this afternoon, Dr. Misir pointed out that the unit is functioning and he dismissed allegations that the unit had been closed.
