Labour Minister, Jennifer Baptiste Primus.

846. This is the number of workers the Labour Ministry says it has on record as being retrenched for the period December 2015 to date, by companies in the private sector.

Labour Minister, Jennifer Baptiste Primus, elaborated on the issue in the Parliament this afternoon.

She said legally there is no requirement for employers to give formal notice of termination to each worker involved once the employer is retrenching less than five workers.

The former Public Services Association President also urged employers to explore all options before going the way of job cuts.

Mrs Baptiste Primus also outlined some of the companies that have decided to lay off workers and how they have been placed on the breadline.

This minister can lament until doomsday. This does not help. In her position she should make sure the law caters for those who are dismissed. This means they have to be notified in due course and compensation has to be paid in accordance with the lenghts of their service. This is the task of a minister. In case the law is not sufficient the minister has to initiate an amendment of the labour law in order to prevemt social hardship for such who have to be laid off.
