The 2015/2016 budget debate has begun. Opposition Leader, Kamla Persad Bissessar, speaking during the third sitting of the 1st session of the 11th parliament, began by highlighting what her government had accomplished during its tenure. She then proceeded to question the government’s agenda, noting that the People’s Partnership while asked to cooperate with the government on the way forward, has been branded negatively, having been accused by the government of malfeasance and corruption.
In her own defence, Mrs. Persad Bissessar highlighted what had been done and how monies had been spent, arguing that much of what had been spent was recurrent expenditure.
The Opposition Leader also gave no apology for promising to pay public servants higher wages during her tenure.
She said fiscal budgets of the past would prove that while expenditure did increase during her term in office, under former PNM administrations, the percentage increase was higher.
