The PM and Opposition Leader meet for 3 hour long discussion on issues of national interest

The Prime Minister and the leader of the Opposition have met in highly anticipated talks on issues of national interest.

These talks, being held on the initiation of the Prime Minister, were expected to focus on such issues as internal self government for Tobago, matters having to do with the judiciary and anti-gang legislation, the Integrity Commission, campaign finance reform, and a code of conduct for parliamentarians.

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar, however, has issued her own statement, suggesting that issues of crime, jobs and the economy be included on the agenda.

The meeting took place in the Parliament Building on the Port of Spain waterfront, and the Prime Minister had scheduled a news conference for 3pm.

Speaking with Newspower Now a short while ago, President of the Downtown Owners and Merchants Association  Gregory Aboud said he is hopeful about about prospects for a positive outcome.

Mr. Aboud said he hopes the best interest of the population is the focal point of today’s meeting, outlining key issues such as Tobago’s sea bridge problems, which he hopes will be addressed.
