A report in Monday’s Express Newspaper states that two Government ministers and a People’s National Movement (PNM) senator are among several people granted a Rent To Own (RTO) mortgage at the exclusive Victoria Keyes development in Diego Martin.
The article revealed that the Express received copies of the Victoria Keyes occupancy sheets, which allegedly show that Tourism Minister Shamfa Cudjoe and Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Ayanna Webster-Roy, as well as senator Nigel DeFreitas have been assigned units 8D, 5D and 6E respectively.
However Housing Minister Randall Mitchell responded to the allegations this morning while speaking on the Power Breakfast Show on Power 102.1FM.
He said there was never any question of secrecy in the matter.
He also said the Government retained apartments for its use so that persons who worked with the Government, as well as visiting professionals could be housed in the units instead of having to be housed in rental units in the private sector.
He said Government retained 10 units for its own use, 48 units via the Rent To Own Program so that persons who fell just short of qualifying for a mortgage could purchase them, and 206 units were to go onto the open market.
He explained that the Tobago MPs were also provided with housing in Trinidad while on official duty.
