T&TEC & WASA Due For An Increase In Their Rates

Public Utilities Minister, Emmanuel George,
is warning that the Water and

Sewerage Authority and Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission are both due for an increase in their rates.

However, he adds that the determination of such increases is out of the hands of the government.

Minister George confirmed this while speaking in a televised interview this morning.

He said customers have not seen an increase in their water rates since 1993 and added that electricity rates have been due for an increase since 2011

Minister George’s statements come one day after he announced during the

post cabinet media briefing that a Ugandan company has been contracted to

oversee the restructuring at WASA.

He did not rule out the possibility of job losses at the utility which he said is

overstaffed.

Speaking this morning Minister George said he hopes to bring the staffing at

WASA to that of a properly functioning utility.
