There are reports that two persons from South Trinidad have died from leptospirosis.
Reports also indicate that approximately 13 people are being treated at the San Fernando General Hospital for the illness. All of the victims are from Woodland, Penal, Debe and environs. These are all areas that have been affected by flooding caused by recent heavy rainfall.
Leptospirosis is caused by a strain of bacteria called leptospira, which is found in certain animals and can spread to humans. Various animals can carry the bacteria, but it is most commonly associated with rats, mice and farm animals, such as pigs, cattle, horses and sheep. Persons can also get the disease by swimming or wading in water contaminated with animal urine.
