15 Tobago athletes on national CAC Junior Championships team

Carifta Games 2014 gold medallists javelin thrower Shakeel Waithe and shot putter Chelsea James are among 15 Tobago athletes who have earned selection on the 49-member national team for the 20th Central American and Caribbean Junior Track and Field Championships carded for July 4 to 6 in Morelia, Mexico.

Waithe, a training partner of TT’s 2012 Olympic Games javelin throw gold medallist Keshorn Walcott, has been named for the boys under 20 javelin throw while Chelsea who also won the silver medal in the discus throw at Carifta will contest the girls under 18 shot put and discus throw events.

Reigning CAC Junior champions Andwuelle Wright, a long jumper, and Kenejah Williams, a discus thrower are re-selected for the Mexico challenge.

Completing the Tobago choices of nine male athletes are Carifta medallist Omari Benoit (high jump), Akanni Hislop (sprinting), Tyriq Horsford (javelin), Vandal Joseph (javelin) and Dwight St. Hillaire (400 m hurdles).

The other girl athletes are  three-time Carifta medallist Zakiya Denoon (sprinting), Asha James (javelin throw), Anya Akili and Khemani Roberts (heptathlon) and Trishelle Leacock (4 x 100 relay).

Arlon Morrison has been selected a member of the coaching staff as a sprint/hurdles coach

Of the 15 athletes  selected ten are members of the Zenith Athletic Club while three are from Tobago Falcons and two compete for Rebirth Athletic Club in Trinidad.  Six are students of Bishop High School, five attend Signal Hill Secondary,  two-Scarborough Secondary. .

Tobago athletes won two gold (Wright and Williams) and four bronze (Shervornne Worrel, Chelse James, Zakiya Denoon, Ashron Sobers) at the 2012 CAC Juniors.
