Residents of Penal, Barrackpore and Mayaro who were severely impacted by last week’s flooding, will be compensated for some of their losses.

Cabinet has authorized the Minister of Rural Development and Local Government, Senator Kazim Hosein to make $2 million available for this purpose.

“Even as we are still awaiting the assessment of the damage caused by extensive flooding and the waters have not yet receded completely the Government recognizes the need for additional resources to be made available to the affected Corporations to enable them to provide additional immediate humanitarian assistance,” said a press statement issued by the Office of the Prime Minister.

The communities will receive the following allocations:

  • Penal/ Debe-  $1 million
  • Mayaro- $500,000
  • Barrackpore – $500,000
