Thirty-two Venezuelan nationals and one Trinidadian were captured by Coast Guard officials on Saturday, as they attempted to breach the country’s borders. Two others have however evaded police capture and were able to make their way ashore.
A pirogue was spotted by the Cast Guard at around 4:36pm on Saturday, in the vicinity of the Third Boca, Chaguaramas. A chase reportedly ensued and the vessel was intercepted near Chacachacare Islands. Upon bringing the vessel to a halt, the officers are said to have spotted two persons swimming to the shore. TTPS officers attempted to locate the two persons, however their efforts proved futile.
The 32 migrants were taken to Staubles Bay where they were medically examined and transported to the Chaguaramas Heliport where they will be quarantined for 14 days.
