National Security Minister Stuart Young says cabinet has given its approval for $6 million dollars to be allocated for fourteen interceptor vessels for the Coast Guard to assist in surveillance of the country’s borders.
He made the comment while speaking at the weekly post cabinet news briefing held at the Diplomatic Center, St. Ann’s this afternoon.
His statement comes on the heels of the recent capture of several immigrants in Erin on Tuesday. But, the minister insists, the country doe not have a refugee crisis, a point he has made in recent weeks.
Local Government Councillor for Cedros, Shankat Teelucksingh, suggested that the government should consider seeking help from agencies such as the International Red Cross to deal with the issue of illegal migrants coming into this country.
However, Minister Young said there are immigration systems in place to treat with persons who enter the country illegally.
