7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Up Northern Caribbean Islands, Including Jamaica.

The UWI Seismic Research Centre says it has received reports an
earthquake that has impacted the northern Caribbean (Greater Antilles).
This region, it says, lies outside of the SRC’s area of responsibility,
therefore it is not authorized to issue official reports on this event. However, Information would be released by ODPEM Jamaica.


The powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck in the Caribbean Sea
between Jamaica and eastern Cuba today.

Witnesses reported strong shaking but there was no immediate word of casualties or heavy damage.

The quake, which hit at 2:10 p.m., was centred 139 kilometres northwest of
Montego Bay, Jamaica, and 140 kilometres west-southwest of Niquero,
Cuba. The epicenter was a relatively shallow 10 kilometres beneath the
surface.
