The Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers Association (TTUTA) has elected its first-ever female President. Antonia De Freitas became the body’sd leader on Tuesday night, having secured 3623 votes in the organization’s election.

Three women had contested the position, including Upper Carapichaima Presbyterian Primary School Principal, Nirmala Chinebas-Dindial who was De Freitas’ closest rival in the race.

Fourteen candidates contested six positions – President, first, second and third Vice President, treasurer and general secretary. Outgoing President, Lynsley Doodhai and those who served with him with remain at TTUTA for the next month to ensure a smooth transition.
