Many persons questioned whether Brazil would be able to stage the event, since, it has been battling with many issues including; inadequate infrastructure and a growing gap between rich and poor.
Brazilians of all ages took to the street in protest of these issues.
The police and transit workers also went on strike in a bid to have their wages increased.
Yesterday Brazilian President, Dilma Rousseff, said her country is ready for the games.
She also refuted statements that the money spend on the games could have been spent in other areas.
The opening ceremony for the event takes place from 2:15 pm Trinidad and Tobago time.
Organizers say it will showcase the diversity and beauty of Brazil and set the scene for the opening match between the host nation and Croatia which startat 4 pm T&T time.
