Cabinet note on cane farming exit strategy by June 18

NEWS GRAPHIC 6A cabinet note outlining compensation for cane farmers is expected to be completed by June 18 for presentation in Parliament.

The Cane Producers Association of Trinidad and Tobago said Minister of Planning, Dr. Bhoendradatt Tewarie recently indicated Government’s support on the Exit Strategy for sugarcane farmers.

The farmers have been appealing for an adequate exit strategy since the closure of the sugar industry in 2003.

Nine thousand cane farmers and workers were said to have been negatively affected by the closure.

Over 180 Million Dollars is being requested by Finance Minister Larry Howai to cover Phase 1 of the exit strategy.

Phase 1 will focus on the implementation of sustainable income generating activities for the farmers.

Discussions will continue regarding other compensatory measures for the farmers.
