Caricom heads meet today

by | Nov 5, 2014

caricomflagsRegional leaders will today begin their discussions on Caricom’s approach in dealing with the Ebola and Chikungunya (Chik V) viruses.

The meeting is scheduled for 4pm at the Diplomatic Center, St Ann’s and follows Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar call for the meeting in September.

The region has not seen a case of the deadly Ebola virus but regional heads are concerned that the virus might make an appearance in the region.

Some Caribbean countries have issued travel bans and visa restrictions against nationals from Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.

Nearly 5,000 people have died since the Ebola outbreak began in West Africa this year.

There are some 800,000 infected by Chik V in the region.

Jamaica, the Dominican Republic and Haiti are the countries most affected.
