As the government looks to present the 2020/2021 fiscal package to the population in Trinidad and Tobago on October 5th, the cultural community’s voice is being represented in part by one of the country’s renowned mas men, Mike Antoine, best known as Big Mike. Mike, the owner of Legacy Mas Band, which has been around for many years, spoke with News Power Digital, highlighting his personal desire to see the country’s government assist the carnival community by taking off duties on imported carnival products.

Antoine said to date, there has really been no word on the status of carnival in Trinidad and Tobago for the season ahead. The COVID-19 pandemic, a clear and present matter of urgent concern across the Caribbean region and the world, Trinidad and Tobago’s government has remained mum on whether any planning could even be encouraged by stakeholders. Mike says he is however happy to see artistes across the region keeping the culture alive by way of virtual expression.

He commented on the merging of the Arts and Culture Ministry with that of Tourism, saying he would like to see some more effort placed on the carnival product and the development of the sector.
