The Chaguanas Chamber of Industry and Commerce has stated that it is fully committed to supporting the owners, management and employees of Food Basket Supermarket in Chaguanas, following the tragic fire that occurred on Tuesday June 14. And, in light of the loss and its impact on the town of Chaguanas.
A release stated that they are urgently calling for a meeting of stakeholders to put together a disaster management plan for the area.
The Food Basket Supermarket has been an institution in Chaguanas for many years and is well known to persons travelling along the Butler Highway as a landmark that identifies the area.
The release said that the supermarket is popular with a large part of the Central population and is a great loss to this close knit community.
In light of the current economic times it said, they are urging other businesses in the Chaguanas area to work together to absorb the 60 employees who have lost their jobs and will now be facing tough times. The Chamber will liaise with the owners of the supermarket to see how we can aid in facilitating this.
We also take this opportunity to congratulate the Fire Service officers who worked so quickly to curb the spread of the fire.
The officers worked for long and tedious hours and were there into the night ensuring that the fire did not rekindle and spread.
With the number of businesses in the area we are well aware that an even bigger disaster could have occurred there and we know that despite all the challenges they are regularly faced with, our Fire Service officers can be counted on to give their all to ensure that no life is lost and damage is minimized.
